Finn Juhl is one of Denmark’s most famous architects, known for his bold, sculptural forms and ultra-refined detailing. Juhl initially wanted to become an art historian and follow his passion for fine arts. His father, however, wouldn't allow a career in the arts and directed Juhl to enrol in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Architecture in Copenhagen in 1930.
Art has always been my main source of inspiration. I am fascinated by shapes which defy gravity and create visual lightness.

Unlike his fellow classmates, Juhl entered the Academy without any experience as a craftsman. This was ultimately a key factor in the furniture he designed. Rather than thinking in terms of practical construction, Juhl had the mind-set of a sculptor when he shaped a piece of furniture. In the 1940s and 1950s, this way of working had never been seen before.
Today, Finn Juhl is considered one of the leading figures in the creation of "Danish design" in the 20th century. He was also the designer who introduced Danish Modern to America and paved the way for the golden age of Scandinavian design throughout the world.
