Showcasing a stunning selection of award-winning architect-designed houses from recent years, Architecture at Home explores a broad range of living environments in diverse locations. Permanent homes and occasional retreats, small houses on compact urban sites and larger ones in remote landscapes, new builds and extensive alterations are captured by New Zealand’s leading architectural photographers and written about in a thought-provoking way. These innovative and expressive homes celebrate the role of good design in shaping the way we live, work and play.
Debra Millar began writing about New Zealand architecture in the late 1980s, becoming the editor of New Zealand Home & Building magazine (now HOME magazine) in her mid-twenties and beginning a long-standing interest in architectural writing and publishing. She credits her mother with igniting her awareness of architecture when she accompanied her to work at Auckland’s Building Centre during school holidays in the 1970s. ‘It was a trove of interesting products, colours and textures. I don’t think I necessarily understood what they were, but I spent days wandering through the displays. It all left an impression.’
